Welcome to Crossroads Animal Hospital

It’s finally November, which means the start of cooler weather, longer nights, and the holiday season! Thanksgiving and Christmas are times for family gatherings, and your pets should definitely be included! However, we have to remember to keep them safe while doing so.

While Fido may be looking at those cookies or fried turkey with longing in his eyes, try to resist giving him a taste. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, so keep it far away from your pets. Fatty foods, such as turkey and chicken, are very hard for dogs and cats to digest. If pets eat even a small amount, they can get pancreatitis, which can require hospitalization and can be deadly. Cooked bones, especially those from chicken and turkey, can splinter easily when chewed and can get stuck or even perforate the intestines. Make sure to dispose of all human food and food wrappings (chocolate, meat, bones, etc) appropriately: tie up in bags and place in a closed container away from the pets.

With holidays come parties, and with parties come people. Make sure your pet enjoys being around other people. If they do not, let them get away from all the action and rest in a room by themselves. Give them some treats and a toy to keep them busy and calm. If they stay outside, make sure it’s not too hot or cold while they’re outside, and make sure they cannot get loose. If your pets are comfortable around guests and want to be a part of the party, make sure they stay safe. Watch them closely, especially when people are entering and leaving your home. Keep their collars with their name tags on it at all times in case they get loose while people are coming or leaving. If they don’t have a collar, or are prone to getting out of their collars (like cats), consider getting them microchipped.

Perhaps one of the best things about holidays are the decorations! However, some of these can be dangerous for your dog or cat if not secured properly. Cats love to chase small things and strings (like tinsel and ornaments), and if eaten, can cause obstructions. The same goes for Fido! Those turkeys and Santa hats can look like a tasty treat for your pooch. Make sure all decorations are secured or where your cat or dog can’t get to them.  Also, while Christmas trees are a staple for Christmas, make sure your cats can’t climb them! They can get seriously injured if they get stuck in the lights or if the tree falls.

We love the holidays just as much as you do, and are dedicated to keeping your pets safe!
